Name: Sven H.
ic! berliner since you missed a spot
Wo Bist du aufgewachsen?
Born and raised in Berlin, the former East to be exact. Back in the days when there were still borders. Not the borders that a lot of people still have in their heads, but the Berlin wall, the border that divided Berlin into grey and colourful. For my first 25 years I lived and worked in Prenzlauer Berg; a “Prenzlberger” just like ic! berlin. The building where ic! berlin today makes screwless sheetmetalglasses used to be a massive bakery, so it’s no wonder the building is called the Backfabrik (baking factory). I remember one day as a little boy, not even eight years old, I was riding along Saarbrücker Straße on my bike and was entranced by the smell wafting from the massive ovens. I stood at an open window, breathing in deeply so as to absorb as much of this unforgettable smell as possible. Then someone came to the window, saw me standing there and gave me a bread roll fresh out of the oven. To this day it was the most delicious bread roll I have ever eaten. Now, nearly 30 years later, I work in that very building earning my own bread rolls.
What’s at the top of your bucket list (things you want to have done before you kick the bucket)?
To live my life so that someone wants to write a book about it; that it’s interesting to other people.
What would you like to learn? Eg. To play the saxophone, to tap dance, Japanese….
I’d like to learn to play the guitar and to sing in a way that the listener doesn’t have to stick his fingers in his ears. Right now I’m at the ‘under the shower’ level and would like to get better.
What are you proud of?
My wonderful son. Now I finally understand what all the fuss is about.
Whom do you admire?
If I were to read this from an ic! berlin employee I would probably gag and think that person was probably one of those kids who sat at the front of the class with no friends. But I don’t work for ic! berlin, I just have the honour to work alongside everyone as master cleaner.
Why do I admire Ralph? Because he has an even more positive attitude that I do when it comes to mastering whatever the world throws at you.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
If you fight you might lose. But if you do not fight you have already lost.
