autumn/winter collection 2010

what has the big bang got to do with a pair of sunglasses? what have cosmic rays got to do with your vision? what has two galaxies colliding got to do with design? physics and glasses: is the connection absurd? the answer is: no!
both physics and ic! glasses are about the fit of something (a physical theory / pair of glasses) to something else (a natural phenomenon / the shape of a face). when the pieces fit, a fusion happens: the glasses become alive as part of a personality.
as well as this, a physicist’s worldview is like a pair of glasses: if we look at the world through the glasses of physics we can see strange things like black holes and starbursts. the science of physics and the glasses of ic! berlin are embodiments of the same underlying principles: perfection, symmetry and simplicity. ic! berlin's autumn/winter collection for 2010 is part of a collaboration with physicist sibylle anderl, and the collection bubbles with fresh designs, colours, science and philosophy. comprising 8 acetate and 11 sheet-metal frames, each model is named for a theory or phenomena plucked from the world of physics. as a subtle reminder of the connection, each frame has a small illustration relating to the phenomena for which it's named engraved on the inside temple.
like the unique glasses of ic! berlin, a good physical theory doesn't have screws: nothing loosens or wears out, and a solid theory doesn't require re-tightening. a physicist brings pieces together in the right way, suddenly there's a 'click', and it fits. that's the ‘ic! effect’.
